Muskmelons vary in shape in size and tend to weighs between 300 and 400 gm. They are round to ovate in shape. They have a pronounced light netting over their exterior surface, a characteristic unique to all Muskmelon varieties. Its interior contains a central seed cavity which is surrounded by thick, smooth, bright saffron coloured flesh. Offering a sweet aroma and flavor.
Muskmelon can be found growing in the late spring and early summer months. Muskmelons also known as sweet melon, kharbujam and cantaloupe are botanically known as Cucumis melo and a member of the Cucurbitaceae family. There are approximately ten different commercial varieties of Muskmelon grown in India today such as Kharbuj, Kharbooj and Karbuja.
Health benefits of Muskmelon:
Muskmelons can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. The optimum storage temperature is 32 - 36 F. Before refrigerating, place the melons in a plastic bag to prevent the muskmelon aroma from favoring other stored foods.
Muskmelon is usually consumed as raw, after taken out from refrigerator. Other than that people also prefer its consumption in the form of shakes, juices, salads and in fruit plates.
