Manilkara zapota is a long-lived, evergreen tree that is indigenous to southern Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. It is also known by the common names sapodilla ([sapoia]), sapote, naseberry, nispero, or chicle. Coastal Yucatán's Petenes mangroves ecoregion, where it is a subdominant plant species, serves as an example of a natural occurrence. It arrived in the Philippines as a result of Spanish colonisation. It is widely grown throughout tropical Asia, including India, Pakistan, Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, as well as in Mexico.

 

The word zapota is derived from the Spanish word zapote, which itself is derived from the Nahuatl word tzapotl.

 

Compared to its Central American siblings, the chikoo is more oval in shape and has brown fuzzy skin, however some have pointy ends. Although the skin cannot be eaten, it functions as a sort of basin for the sweet flesh. The flesh has a smooth, juicy texture and ranges in hue from off-white to yellowish brown. High concentrations of fructose and sucrose are the cause of the Chikoo flesh's sweet flavour. Its flavour and texture have been likened to pears.
